Hundreds trapped after train breaks down

By Kimberly Spykerman

ABOUT 900 MRT passengers were trapped on a train for more than 30 minutes after it broke down between stations during the evening rush hour yesterday.

The North-South Line train, bound for Jurong East station, ground to a halt at around 7pm, shortly after pulling out of Ang Mo Kio station.

A technical fault rendered it immobile, and it sat on the tracks till another train - also packed with passengers - arrived.

According to The Straits Times, the second train then pushed the faulty one all the way to Yio Chu Kang station, where SMRT staff manually prised the carriage doors apart to free the trapped passengers.

"When I first enquired at Braddell station, I was informed that train services were ok, but slow," said AsiaOne editor, Adrian Tay.

However, Mr Tay, who was one of those affected by the disruption, found this was not to be when the train he boarded reached the Ang Mo Kio station. There, passengers were instructed to alight as the train was being taken off service.

"There was a huge number of passengers trying to get out of the station. They had to exit through a limited number of gates."

"Fortunately everyone was behaving in an orderly manner."

While there was a rush of passengers heading towards the gates, a relatively large number of people were still waiting in the platform area, he noted.

Ang Mo Kio Hub, the nearest shopping complex to Ang Mo Kio station, saw a spillover of the crowd.

Taxi stands and bus stops were packed.

One of the bus stops, which had buses heading towards Yishun, even had people spilling onto the road.

With full train services only resuming at close to 8pm, over 6,000 people were forced to find alternative ways to get to their destinations.

Another commuter who was at the scene told Stomp no reason was given for the sudden disruption.

According to Stomp, suspension of the train service resulted in long queues for buses. A traffic jam quickly formed along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.

Northbound services between Ang Mo Kio & Khatib disrupted due to faulty train
By Lau Joon-Nie, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 13 May 2009 2232 hrs

SINGAPORE: Northbound train services from Ang Mo Kio to Khatib MRT stations were disrupted for about 50 minutes when a train developed a fault and stalled around 7pm on Wednesday.

According to an SMRT spokesperson, the train had to be pushed to Yio Chu Kang station by another train travelling from Ang Mo Kio station.

Some 1,800 passengers onboard both trains subsequently alighted at Yio Chu Kang station at about 7:30pm.

SMRT said commuters were kept informed about the service disruption through announcements in the trains and at affected stations.

The public was also informed through MediaCorp Radio's Traffic Watch service.

SMRT apologised for the inconvenience caused and said northbound train services resumed at around 7.50pm. - CNA/vm
